What is the Law of Attraction?

"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7
"...what ever a man sows, so shall he reap." Galatians 6:7

So, what exactly is the Law of Attraction?

The law of attraction is a way of understanding how we get the results we get in life. The movie 'the Secret" really got people excited about getting material things in their life, like the new car, more money, the big house, but it also touches upon how you can change your relationships with others, your work environment and really every aspect of your life, just by thinking differently.

Why does it work?

The law of attraction is science, just as the law of gravity is science. The law of gravity keeps your feet planted on the earth so you won't float away, and the law of attraction brings to you together with other things that are on the same frequency as your thought.

In reality the law of attraction is a subset of the law of vibration. And as Bob Proctor points out, "Everything vibrates or moves, nothing sits idle. Everything is in a constant state of motion, and therefore, there is no such thing as inertia, or a state of rest." Everything vibrates at a certain rate or frequency. Thoughts have one of the highest frequencies of vibration.

The law of attraction works like a magnet to bring you together with other things, people, events, experiences that match your rate of vibration.

Are there other definitions of the law of attraction?

Michael Losier's defines the law of attraction this way, "I attract to my life whatever I give my attention, energy, and focus to, whether positive or negative (or whether wanted or unwanted)". I like that one, it helps you understand how you are directing your thought, through attention, energy, and focus. They are really different terms describing the same thing.

The Abraham-Hicks material states simply, "Ask and it is given." It is always given.

Where to begin?
The first thing you need to do is to notice when the law of attraction is at work in your life. It always works, but your awareness of the law's movement in your life is the only proof you will need. Notice the little things. For example, just last night while I was sitting at my computer working on one of my latest projects, my husband came in and asked me why Brent's name is on the wall where we measure our kids' height. My cousin Brent is the most kid-like relative I have, he is fun and full of joy. He enjoys being a kid and celebrating life. I responded that it was totally appropriate that his name was there, and that the kids most likely measured him when he was here for Christmas Eve. That moment the phone rang. It was Brent. My husband answered the phone and told Brent that we were just talking about him. And today I am sitting here writing about the experience. He called to invite us to his 40th birthday party! We are definitely going.

When you begin to notice synchronicity, coincidence, serendipity or karma in your life, you begin to have an awareness of what is happening in your life and your part in the creative process. It is a good idea to keep a journal of the the things you notice and keep track of them. It will attract more and more of those experiences into your life and then you will have more faith in your ability to become a deliberate creator of your life.

Advice on becoming a deliberate creator?
Becoming a deliberate creator begins by getting clear on what you want. Really clear. Most people attract randomly, it is hit or miss. The solution is to understand what you really want in your life and get excited about your future with the picture of the thing you want in it. Of course you can't just wave a magic wand and wish for a thing to happen. But the process is as exciting as magic. When you know what you want from life, really want, there is no effort involved for you to get it. It seems to magically happen because the work is more like play. If you want something bad enough you take action to get it. You buy the lottery ticket knowing that you will win someday, and it could be today!

Gratitude is the most important component in being a deliberate creator. In his book, Think & Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill, reminds us to be grateful for the things that are not seen yet. Be grateful for the ideas that moves us. Gratitude is crucial. It puts us in the proper mindset for manifesting. We are servants to a higher power. Gratitude is an expression of that understanding. There is no lasting success without this understanding.

Are their other references to the law of attraction?
There are so many references to the law of attraction in writings throughout history. I couldn't possibly begin to reference them all here, but I do invite you to learn as much as you can about the law of attraction and find a definition that resonates with you. Find a way to understand why it works in your life and how it works and then you will begin to work with the law of attraction instead of feeling like the universe is working you.

The Good News Behind the Law of Attraction
by Mark Andres

In his book, The Law of Attraction, Michael Losier explains the Law of Attraction by stating, "Whatever I give my attention, energy, and focus to, whether wanted or unwanted, I attract into my life."

Let's examine this definition and breakdown each part. "Whatever I give my attention, energy, and focus to" means that whatever things or ideas you think about, talk about, and act on. At first, this may worry you. Now I have to pay attention to everything I think about? However, if you think about this carefully, you will realize that you have complete control. You have a choice about what action to take or not take. You have the ability to select the words you use when you speak. While it may be difficult at first, you even have the ability to choose what you think. It takes some practice, but anyone can make a change. So the first piece of good news is you are in complete control of what you put out to the Universe (in thoughts, words, and actions).

The second part of the definition states "whether wanted or unwanted." This means that the Universe does not know if you want or do not want something you are thinking or talking about. The Law of Attraction is a scientific law, like gravity. It does not make judgments about your thoughts or words. It merely reacts to them. The law of gravity works the same way. If I am standing at the top of a high diving board and I jump off, does the law of gravity know if I meant to jump off or if I accidentally fell? Does it care if I am a good person or not? Does it care about anything in my past or present condition? Of course it does not care about any of these things. Gravity takes over and sends my body speeding toward the water below. The Law of Attraction works in exactly the same way. It does not care if you want something or not. It does not matter if you are a good or bad person. The Law of Attraction pays no attention to any of these things. It simply matches whatever you focus on by giving you more. Hence, the second piece of good news is that no matter if you are rich or poor, fat or skinny, tall or short, black, white, red, or purple, you can still have the Law of Attraction bring into your life whatever you want. It does not matter what you did in the past, who you married, what your parents were like. You can start over right now. (To learn how you can use this law to attract what you want on purpose rather than unconsciously, come to our weekly work group to learn specific techniques.)

The final part of the definition says "I attract into my life." I attract into MY life. YOU attract into YOUR life. Tom attracts into Tom's life. Mary attracts into Mary's life. This can be a sticky point for many people when they first learn about the Law of Attraction. The implication is that you have created EVERYTHING in your life. The bad news is that you can no longer blame others for your problems. It is not the government's fault, or your parents' fault, or spouse's fault, or your teacher's fault. In fact, there is no one to blame, not even you. Now, the good news is you have the freedom to employ the Law of Attraction to your advantage. Just as the ancient Romans built aqueducts that used the law of gravity to move water thousands of miles, you can create your own life exactly the way you want it by using the Law of Attraction deliberately. You were playing a game without knowing the rules. Now that you know the rules, you can start winning.

So remember, the good news about the Law of Attraction is

1. You have complete control over your thoughts, words, and actions.

2. The Law of Attraction is a scientific law that simply reacts without judging like gravity. This means your past history and current situation do not matter. You can always start fresh.

3. You now understand the rules and have the freedom to create your own life exactly the way you want it by using the Law of Attraction deliberately to your advantage.
